Mark Zemelman - workshop descriptions

Moti is available for workshops and residencies of varying lengths. Below are some of his course descriptions. Please contact him for more details and arrangements.

CONTACT IMPROVISATION FOR BEGINNERS
Through the physical principles of touch, momentum, and weight sharing, this dance practice explores the skills of falling, rolling, counterbalance, lifting using minimal effort, how to make ourselves light when being lifted, centering and breathing techniques, and responsiveness to our partners and surroundings. Together we create a safe space to explore these skills and let our curiosity and joy lead the dance.

Touching the Moment: From Stillness to Impulse to Action
Contact Improvisation is an honoring of every moment. There is a sweet surrendering that happens when our bodies stay faithful to what is happening now, and now... and NOW! In this workshop we learn to recognize and differentiate the subtle impulses in our choices and our partner's choices. We begin to decypher the cues that we give and receive which tell us when to lead or follow, when to go up, when to go down, where to touch, how to lift, when to slow down, and when to be still. Learn to stay in integrity with each choice, never forcing, never rushing. When Body, Mind, and Spirit are united in their instinctive wisdom we find our-selves at home in every moment expressing our true nature.
- For the Beginner in all of us

Helium & Quicksand: Rising & Falling
Images can lead us into states of awareness.  The images we’ll be using in this workshop are designed to specifically facilitate skills in moving with and against gravity,  falling techniques,  weight sharing opportunities, and supporting ourselves and our partners during these movement states.  The skills we’ll be practicing are especially suitable for beginners but open to all levels.

Bodies of Water: Dancing Fluidly
Enjoy dancing with graceful flow, dynamic stillness, delicious freedom, and clear direction. From a crystal clear still surfaced pond to surfing the wild ocean waves, we will follow our streams of motion to their source. Rivers are carved out like our inner landscapes. There are the ones that have been around for eons and the ones that are just trickles starting to find new pathways. Let's examine our dancing pathways the well traveled to the unknown, finding ease in connection with our partners like water seeking the path of least resistance.

Contact for Couples
Trust, intimacy, giving and receiving, following and leading. All of these aspects of relationship, all of these aspects of partner dancing. Contact Improvisation takes these subtle communication skills to another level. In a two hour private session explore your connection to a beloved, a friend, or your favorite dance partner. Bring more excitement to your comfort zones and more safety to your edges. With playfulness and heartfelt presence, learn effortless ways to bring your dancing to new depths. Even if you or your partner don't think of yourselves as dancers, come discover new tools for a dynamic connectedness in the dance of life.

Tuning UP: Light Body, Sound Body
LIGHT
1. of little weight or density; "she was light as a feather"
2. free from sadness or troubles; "a light heart"
3. the quality of being luminous; "the light of the moon"
4. an enlightening experience; "he finally saw the light"
SOUND
1. Noise, audible vibrations; "the sound of wings flapping"
2. Secure and safe;"a sound foundation"
3. Showing good judgment; "it was a sound decision"
4. a narrow channel of the sea joining two larger bodies of water.

This workshop bridges the worlds of movement and sound. Using Contact Improvisation as a base, we will explore calibrating our dances to live and recorded music as well as sounds that we create with our body, breath, and voice. How can we use sound to cue our partners for lifts and landings? Are there sounds that can literally make our bodies lighter? Find the musicality of our dances. Come in for a tune up!

Contact Lenses: Ways of seeing within the dance.
Do you make eye "Contact" when you dance? Direct eye contact, peripheral vision, closed eyes, blurry vision, how does it affect our dances? Using a combination of seeing and blindfolded activities, we will explore vision as a way to intensify awareness in our connections. - All Levels

"Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small it takes time - we haven't time - and to see takes time, like having a friend takes time."
- Georgia O'Keeffe

Contact ImProp - Contact Improvisation with props:
Using giant rubberbands, barely visible thread, chairs, scarves, balls, water balloons, paper airplanes, eggs, and more we will explore the principles of Contact and bring sensitivity to different aspects of our dance. While thread can connect us to the subtleties of leading and following, rubberbands correspond to our muscles and connective tissue, water balloons to our organs, and raw eggs?? well, ok, maybe I'll hard boil them...
- All Levels

Action Theater: The Improvisation of Presence
This class focuses on Ruth Zaporah's movement theater work, which isolates four elements of form: Timing, Space, Shape, and Dynamics. This work also integrates breath, sound, and speech with movement. We learn to work in the musicality of the moment, listening to the ensemble, learning when and how to support a rhythm (of movement, sound, or speech) and when to contrast or contradict. In this work, rather than thinking or devising what we are going to do next, which takes us out of our bodies and the moment, we learn to respond to the awareness of our environment.

Art and Performance in Nature
Using forests and fields as our stage, sticks and stones as our props, and mother nature as our muse, we will generate site specific, improvisational mixed media performance pieces. Be prepared to sing, dance, write, act, draw, and sculpt as we learn how to listen to our surroundings for divine inspiration.

Here's a good two to five day intensive:

FALLING AND FLYING

Day One - COVERING GROUND
Falling can be fun! What goes up must come down, and you have to go down to go back up again. Learn how to root, roll, and dig into the Cliffs, Plateaus, and boulders of our bodies to find that negotiation with gravity that we call flying. Find new pathways to the ground. Learn about your soft landing gear. Find ways to be light even as you anchor yourself to the Earth's gravitational pull. Come fall down and cover some new ground.

Day Two - GROWING WINGS
A study in the art of flying, we'll explore lifts, weight-sharing and the dynamics of flight. Learn to develop more comfort with heights, being upsidedown, and using momentum through the air. We will practice listening to the subtle invitations that our partners offer us to go UP and find new pathways towards the sky!

This is a perfect five day workshop, though it can be done as separate individual day workshops:

CONTACT IMPROVISATION AND THE FIVE SENSES:

Day 1 and 2 - Touch, Taste, and Smell: Touching the Moment
Contact Improvisation is an honoring of every moment. Learn to stay in integrity with each choice, never forcing, never rushing. Learn to recognize and differentiate the subtle impulses in our choices and our partner's choices. Begin to decypher the touch cues that we give and receive which tell us when to lead or follow, when to go up, when to go down, how to lift, when to slow down, and when to be still.

Day 3 - Contact Lenses: Ways of seeing within the dance

Do you make eye contact when you dance? Direct eye
contact, peripheral vision, closed eyes, blurry vision, how
does it affect our dances? Using a combination of seeing
and blindfolded activities, we will explore vision as a way
to intensify awareness in our dances and connections.

DAY 4 and 5 - Tuning UP: Contact Improv & Musicality

During this segment of the intensive we bridge the worlds of movement and sound. Using Contact Improvisation as a base, we will explore calibrating our dances to live and recorded music as well as sounds that we create with our body, breath, and voice. How can we use sound to cue our partners for lifts and landings? Can we make sounds that literally make our bodies lighter? Find the musicality of our dances. Come in for a tune up!
