Aalia Hashem

Contact: Faces of CI

Saltspring Island, BC,

https://aaliadances.myportfolio.com/

I am a Contact Improv Teacher and Jam/Event Organizer.

I go by Aalia Hashem (also known as Marriki) and I'll be guiding your dancing days. A Contact Improvisation Facilitator and Dance Artist from Vancouver, Canada, I have been teaching the practice since 2019, hosting workshops, retreats, classes, and jams. Previous movement studies over the last two decades include contemporary dance, hip-hop, swing , fusion, qigong, and yoga.

I began my training in Contact Improvisation from Edam Dance Company, studying with some of the originators of CI, including Anne Cooper, Andrew Harwood, Martin Keough, and Peter Bingham. In 2019, my inquiry into the dance form took me abroad to Asia to continue studying with 40 Contact teachers, including intensives by Alain Montebran, Kirstie Simson, Sasha Dodo & Dolores Dewhurst-Marks, and Vega Lukkonnen. In a short time, I was based in Bali, dancing in music videos for International artists, performing at dance conferences, and directing collaborative films.

Projects I've launched include "Contact Body" the first self-paced online course for Contact during the pandemic, "Fortune Score" an oracle deck game for jams, and hosting the podcast "Faces of CI" interviewing Contact facilitators about CI as a mirror for life. Momentum, my Beginner's intro workshop for Contact Improvisation, has been taught 20 + times to over 200 dancers, sharing the fundamental roots of the practice through technique, playfulness, and creativity.

Clients and teaching opportunities in recent years include Bali Bloom Festival 2022, Towards 50CI Conference, NYX Bali Co-working, Soulshine, Parq Ubud and Mansion Resort. I previously organized and taught Current Artist & Dance Retreat (2022), and Bali Eco Stay Jam (2021).

My curiosity and love of dance stems from sharing Contact principles, delving into the socio-psychological aspects through reflective group conversation, creative improvising, exploring dance scores, and befriending the unknown. When I'm not dancing, I'm likely meditating in nature, attempting humo

Scott Wells
Flying =/= Jumping
A 5 day Intensive on Contact Improv
Jan 19th -23rd, 2011 Victoria, B.C.

This is the workshop where Scott teaches all his crazy lifts. In this Intermediate workshop we will start with clear, satisfying contact in which pleasure is the first teacher. We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics and deft maneuvers. For the acrobatics everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust-- everyone will do something new. We will learn some repertory and practice taking the aerial work into improv. Jumping =/= Flying because jumping is a muscular action, whereas flying is in the bones and is affected greatly by emotions and attitude. Don’t be scared off by the photo, no-one is required to leap over chairs!

For an example of Scott’s innovative work, check out this 1 minute trailer:
